Announcement

Dragoons, please join me in commemorating the action at Leliefontein, where our Regiment served bravely as recognized by the awarding of Victoria Crosses to Lieutenants Cockburn, Turner and Sergeant Holland.  This is a day, like many, where we can be particularly proud to be Dragoons and should you decide to reach out to one ensure that you ask him or her - what day is it today?

I would also like to take this opportunity to outline the Regiment’s intent this coming April to recognize the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Leeuwarden, by The Royal Canadian Dragoons, on 15 April 1945.  The plan is to send five deserving Dragoons to Leeuwarden to represent the Regiment and the intent is for the Association to cover the costs for one and the Guild to cover the costs for four others.  The estimated cost per Dragoon is $2,600 (travel and per diem) and the Guild is in the process of raising funds for this endeavour.  The first “out of the gate” has been the foursome of Marlene and Clive Addy, Mike Appleton and myself who have pledged to cover the expenses of one of the five deserving Dragoons.  You can do the math, so if you can find three others, willing to dig deep, you may also be able to support one Dragoon.  However, if you wish to make an individual donation, of any amount, please do not hesitate to do so.  Let me also acknowledge and thank both Peter Atkinson and Tom Skelding who have put their heart and soul into planning this event, which is clearly a credit to their dedication to those who have served, and continue to serve, our great Regiment.

If you are able to make a contribution to this Leeuwarden fund please make out a cheque to The Guild of The Royal Canadian Dragoons and mail it to the Regimental 2IC at the following coordinates (Steve will be watching out for the cheques):

Well there you go - Leliefontein and Leeuwarden all in one day … what fun is that … clearly it is truly “just another fine day to be a Dragoon”.

Cheers, Jim.
