It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of SB-181855 CWO (retd) Alan Rich Turner on 16 Jan 2025 in his 83rd year. He died peacefully surrounded by all his loving family on 16 January 2025 at The Ottawa Hospital. Born 9 May 1942 to Alan and Dorothy (Durham) Turner in England; Rich immigrated to Canada with his family on the Queen Mary in 1952.
Rich’s family settled in Toronto where he lived until he joined the Canadian Army in 1958. Rich proudly served Canada and loved the Canadian Flag. He initially served with The Queen’s York Rangers (1st American Regiment) and then joined the Regular Army serving primarily with The Royal Canadian Dragoons, later with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) and he culminated his career with The Ontario Regiment (RCAC) serving as their Regimental Sergeant Major. He was proud of ‘The Corps’ and the men he served with.
Rich is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sharon (Ford); son Paul (Adina) and daughter Lori Ann (Warren) Baccardax; his five grandchildren Shaily (Shawn), Mitchell, Feyah, Cora and Andrew, and great grandchild Akiva Baruch; his brother-in-law Bill Cathrae; nieces and nephews Judy Schultz (Paul), Robert Morris (Dawn), Scott (Tracey), Craig, and Glenn Raffan; great nieces and nephews; and Foxy the cat. He was preceded in death by his parents Alan and Dorothy, sister Maxine and her husband Bob Raffan, brother-in-law Bob Morris, sister-in-law Shirley Cathrae, nephew Alan Raffan and niece Terri Morris.
Interment will be at the Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford, Ontario in the Summer of 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an organization or charity of your choice. Rich was very appreciative of the medical support he received at the Meaford and Ottawa Hospitals. All the staff provided him with great care, comfort and dignity.
