Happy 100th Birthday to MWO(Retd) Phillip Daniel

Today MWO retd Philip Daniel turned 100 yrs old. He’s quite the character and story teller. His time in the RCD is short, being posted from I Staff Toronto to the regiment in Gagetown late 1960’s as the TQMS.

In the Second World War, Philip trained with the 1st Hussars at Camp Borden before being transferred to other units in the RCAC, he rejoined the 1H on 16 March 1945 and served with them until the end of the war and witnessed the horror of the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp shortly after its liberation. During the Korean War, he served with Lord Strathcona’s Horse, which was commanded by a Second World War veteran of the 1st Hussars, Major Victor Jewkes (also a pre-war RCD horse soldier). He was wounded in action in Korea and stayed in the Canadian Army after he recovered. He then served in the UN Emergency Force with 8CH between Egypt and Israel where he was wounded again by an Israeli landmine. His multiple wounds did not deter him from continuing his military career: he later served with NATO in West Germany and returned to the Middle East for another UN deployment. PA was the TQMS of the RCD Gagetown in the late 1960’s. He retired in the early 1970’s.

PA is currently a resident at Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital, Toronto, ON and is a Life Member of the Association/SCO Chapter.
